Comets On Fire
Comets On Fire
Catalog #: SC LP
Made and released in 2001. Edition of 500 vinyl. Silkscreen and spray paint covers.
My wife and I made this album cover for the first Comets On Fire record in our apartment at 819 Riverside ave, Santa Cruz, Ca with the help of COF's Ben Flashman. We took each blank black cover and gave it a sporadic layer of silver spray paint to look like the cosmos and then silk screened the metallic gold cover and back sleeve images over the top. You have to hold the spray paint trigger only about 1/4 the way down and push it forward to get it to sputter instead of spray and as the paint cans got low it could be tricky and spit out streams or big shitty globs of paint. We only had 500 sleeves exactly for 500 records and didn't know hot to get anymore as these were sent to me from Czechoslovakia with the vinyl, so every sleeve had to be used despite silk screening defects or some of the starry backgrounds looking more or less cosmic.
Jello Biafra told me that when he bought his copy of the album in 2001 he was in a record store in the Midwest and picked it up out of a bin and turned it over and said, "Holy shit, I have to have this just based on the enticing cover, never having heard of the band or the music therein. I know a lot of those original 500 customers must have purchased on the basis of the art/packaging cuz God knows nobody but about 11 kinds in Santa Cruz had ever heard of us before when that album made its leap out into the world.
